Yesterdays: Glacier burns down Two Medicine chalets

70 years ago

June 1, 1956

Glacier National Park burned down the chalets at Two Medicine. One of the rustic buildings in 1934 was said to be where President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave one of his famous “fireside chats” while visiting the park.



60 years ago

June 3, 1966

Glacier National Park was doubling its women naturalists. The year before there were two. This year there would be four. All told Glacier had 31 naturalists at the time.



50 years ago

June 3, 1976

Editor Mel Ruder ran all photos on the front page of the Hungry Horse News. It was a stark departure from the early years of the newspaper, which was dense with short stories. The photos were all Glacier Park scenes and wildlife.



40 years ago

June 4, 1986

Jim Bennett and Craig Swenson greeted customers at the door at the new First Citizens Bank. The bank was formerly the Bank of Columbia Falls, but had failed and the two investors took it over.

June 6, 1996

A grizzly bear mauled a man from South Carolina near the Avalanche Lake trail. The bear, which turned out to be a sow with a cub, was charging down the John’s Lake spur and the man wasn’t paying attention until it was too late. He dropped down and curled into a ball but the bear bit and scratched him and then left him alone. The man was 70 and was able to seek help on his own.

Debate on whether to re-zone a tract of land for a developer for high density housing east of the river went well into the night. The swampy land is still not developed today.

There was an open house planned for the Cedar Creek Lodge. The hotel was the first major project done in the city by developer Mick Ruis.
