St. Ignatius Seniors: Steps to prevent food waste
Theresa Yares | Lake County Leader | UPDATED 1 week, 1 day AGO
In the U.S., 40% of the food supply goes uneaten. It wastes vital resources – water, land and labor, and is the single largest component in U.S. landfills, where it generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Steps to prevent food waste:
• Plan ahead – before going to the grocery store, make a list so you don’t buy more than you need, and do not veer from that list;
• Serve smart – portion control reduces plate waste and is also good for the waistline; • Love leftovers – portion out leftovers in small containers, mark the contents and date, then refrigerate and use within 3-4 days or freeze immediately;
• Compost, don’t trash – food scraps (except for meat) can be recycled into compost, which can be added to the soil to help plants grow. (From usda.gov website)
