SANDPOINT — Safety concerns over the pedestrian Long Bridge are prompting its closure at 5 p.m. today, Idaho Transportation Department officials said Friday. 

ITD officials said a recent inspection found significant structural deterioration affecting critical parts of the bridge. Until repairs are made, the damaged areas can no longer safely accommodate public access. The closure was suggested by experts for the public’s safety and the integrity of the bridge. 

ITD Public Information Officer Heather McDaniel said there is no concern about the vehicular Long Bridge at this time because the two are separate structures.

"We understand how important this bridge is to Sandpoint," District Engineer Ryan Hawkins said. "For many residents, this bridge is more than a crossing. It's part of daily life, a connection between neighborhoods, a route to work and services, and an iconic part of the community. We recognize the impact this decision will have, and it is not one we take lightly." 

In the press release, ITD officials said the department is still finalizing details of how long the bridge will be closed. McDaniel said that crews have yet to finish their inspection of the pedestrian bridge and that it will have to be completed before the department can create a timeline for reopening the regional icon. McDaniel added that the repairs will be significant and could take longer because of the weight concerns on the pedestrian bridge, which will limit how much equipment ITD can have on the bridge.

ITD officials said that they recognize the importance of the bridge and are actively exploring options to provide vehicular transportation for residents who rely on the pedestrian bridge for access to employment and essential services. McDaniel said the decision was not made lightly, but was necessary to keep residents safe.

"We know this bridge holds a special place in the identity of Sandpoint," Hawkins said. "Our responsibility is to ensure public safety, and the inspection findings make clear that action is necessary. As we move forward, we are committed to keeping the community informed and working with local partners to address impacts wherever possible." 

The department closed parts of the pedestrian Long Bridge in May. A study to explore the replacement of both bridges is underway, but construction has yet to be funded, ITD said.
