OPINION: A house united

In 1858, Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous “House Divided” speech. Quoting Scripture, he warned that “a house divided against itself cannot stand.” Lincoln was speaking about a nation facing a profound moral and political crisis, but his words remind us of a timeless truth: no organization, community, or political party can thrive when internal division becomes more important than its shared purpose.

The recent election of new leadership within the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee provides an opportunity to reflect on that lesson. The election results should be viewed as a chance to restore balance and renew our commitment to what should unite Republicans in the first place.

Republicans in Kootenai County agree on far more than we disagree. We believe in individual liberty, constitutional government, fiscal responsibility, safe communities, strong families, quality education, and the importance of citizen participation. We may not always agree on every candidate, or policy proposal, but disagreement is not a weakness. In fact, healthy debate has always been one of the strengths of both the Republican Party and our constitutional republic.

Our founders understood that freedom depends on pluralism. They created a system designed to take into account differing viewpoints while protecting the rights of all. They knew that concentrating power in the hands of a few was dangerous, regardless of who held it. The strength of our republic comes from welcoming more voices, more perspectives, and more participation, not less. That principle should guide us moving forward.

The KCRCC does not belong to any one group, personality, or ideology. It belongs to the Republicans of Kootenai County. Its purpose is not to decide who is sufficiently Republican, but to support Republican candidates, grow the party, encourage civic engagement, and help elect conservatives who will faithfully serve our communities.

As the pendulum of political power inevitably swings, we should resist the temptation to stack the deck in favor of whichever side happens to be in control at the moment. Fair processes, open participation, and mutual respect are not partisan values; they are the foundation of lasting institutions.

Lincoln warned about the dangers of division. The answer, however, is not uniformity. It is unity around shared principles. A house divided against itself cannot stand — but a house united around shared principles can carry out extraordinary things.

The undertaking before the newly elected KCRCC is not to rehash old battles, but to build a stronger Republican Party that welcomes participation, that values integrity, respectful disagreement, and focuses on the work of serving our community and advancing conservative principles. If we can do that, the future of the KCRCC and the Republican Party in Kootenai County will be brighter than ever.

And that’s the Idaho way.
