Idaho free fishing day 2026

Idahoans are encouraged to head to the waters this Saturday, June 13, to enjoy Idaho’s free fishing day.
The second Saturday in June is always reserved in Idaho as a free fishing day and serves as an opportunity for families to cast a line in the water without the need for a fishing license. However, all other regulations are still in effect.
“In the month leading up to Free Fishing Day, Fish and Game hatcheries stocked about 243,000 catchable rainbow trout throughout the state,” Fish and Game Hatchery Manager Bryan Grant said.
Multiple events will take place across the state to promote the outdoor sport, with some spots having loaner fishing gear for newbie anglers.
In the Panhandle, Rathdrum will host its annual fishing derby for kids from 9 to 11 a.m. The event is free and open to kids 14 years of age and younger. While a fishing license isn’t required, officials ask participants to bring their own poles, worms and barbless hooks.
Farragut State Park, Priest Lake and Round Lake are all participating in Idaho Fish and Game’s loaner program, where eager anglers can borrow a pole and equipment to fish for free.
The program aims to increase awareness of the fishing opportunities throughout Idaho while eliminating barriers of not having appropriate equipment.
IDFG officials remind those who plan to fish that all fishing rules remain in effect.
“All other fishing rules and regulations, including creel limits, opening dates and tackle restrictions remain in effect. Always check the seasons and rules for the water where you plan to go fishing.”
