Anne Southwick, 92
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 4 days, 7 hours AGO
Anne Alice Southwick, 92, born Jan. 31, 1934, to Edward and Stella Posnanski in Newark, N.J. She passed away May 26, 2026, in Post Falls, Idaho, after spending her last days surrounded by her family.
She was raised in Ocean Grove, N.J., and joined the Marine Corps in 1953. She was stationed in San Francisco where she met her Marine husband Richard, they were married for 53 years.
Shortly after Richard was transferred to Medical Lake, Wash., he retired and they both worked for the State of Washington, where despite being not small but “fun size” she worked as a Correctional Officer. After retirement, they moved to Shelton, Wash.
During their time in the Marines, they were both active in the rifle/pistol team. Once settled in Shelton, they rekindled that interest and joined the local team. Alice was a very good markswoman and received many awards and trophies, placing as high as third in the state in her division.
Alice loved staying busy. She was active in the local Senior Center, the Volks Walks Club, as well as doing crafts, ceramics, sewing quilts for the children’s hospital and volunteering at the food bank. Her nickname was Rowdy to her friends because she was a petite ball of feisty energy.
Shortly after her husband’s passing in 2007, she moved to Post Falls, Idaho, to be close to her daughter and grandson. As a Veteran, she joined the CDA Veterans Marine Corps League. She became very active with Toys for Tots and the I-90 rest area coffee wagon.
She was also very proud to be an honorary member of the Marine Corps Devil Dogs. In 2019, she was chosen for a Veterans Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., and also honored with a Quilt of Valor for her service. Her military service was one of the things she was most proud of.
Anne “Alice” was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and her parents. She is survived by her younger sister, Gloria, of Florida, four children: David (Jolyn), Danial (Lynn), Dale (Dawnel), Doreen Capaul, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Alice will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life, spunkiness, high energy and willingness to help others as well as her great love for her family.
Services will be held at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake on Wednesday, June 24 at 1:45 p.m. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Richard.
