Sandpoint Friendship Station growing in community spirit

A new ministry designed to provide compassionate support and meaningful companionship to individuals and families facing the daily challenge of memory loss, dementia and caregiving has been offering weekly programs since January 2026.
The organization, which is hosted at Sandpoint United Methodist Church, continues to grow in a movement of compassionate presence, kindness and deepened community, organizers said.
"Sandpoint Friendship Station is rooted in kindness and community spirit," said the group's Lissa "Elissabeth" DeFreitas. "Its mission is to offer a nurturing, enriching space where guests can enjoy creative, recreational and enriching activities, as well as joy-filled fellowship and gentle care — while giving their caregivers a much-needed time of rest and renewal."
The Sandpoint Friendship Station currently meets one day a week on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church to embark on a journey of fellowship, connection, purpose and joy as well as enjoy a nourishing shared meal.
DeFreitas and Deni Williamson combined to bring their vision of a local respite ministry in Sandpoint to the community.
Inspired by the belief that "no one should walk the journey of dementia and caregiving alone," Williamson and Defreitas join with the expanding "Respite for All" movement, serving with heart and hope, compassion and purpose. The seeds of this nationwide Friendship Revolution have emerged in 72 communities across America.
“This ministry is rooted in love,” said DeFreitas, one of the program’s founders. "Let's build a friendship station together, where every life is honored, every caregiver supported, and every heart welcomed.”
Sandpoint Friendship Station is currently welcoming volunteers who are willing to share their time, talents, and caring presence; and caregivers and participants who would benefit from this supportive circle of community.
The Sandpoint Friendship Station is hosting a free four-hour training session on Monday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"We welcome individuals with a kind heart and willingness to offer a gift of presence to those living with dementia and memory issues," DeFreitas said.
