Since 1992, more than 2 million young people between the ages of 8 and 17 have taken their first flight in a private aircraft through the Young Eagles program. On Saturday, local students had the same opportunity at Mineral County Airport.

Angie Hopwood, a 5th and 6th grade science teacher in Superior, organized the free flights for students through the Young Eagles program of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Based in Oshkosh, the organization has more than 1,000 chapters worldwide and offers members a variety of aviation-related activities and programs based on their interests.

Young Eagles is the only program of its kind dedicated solely to introducing and inspiring young people in the world of aviation. All participating pilots have passed background checks, are fully credentialed, and volunteer their own aircraft, time, and fuel to provide the flights.
