Daniel 'Captain Dan' Mimmack, 70

Daniel Mark Mimmack peacefully surrendered his life journey Friday, 29 May, 2026, at his home surrounded by loved ones, his wife holding his hand.
He was born Nov 23, 1955, raised in Santa Clara, Calif., and traveled the West Coast during his formative years, gaining an inner vision for adventure. The adventure started after graduating from high school in Anchorage, Alaska, until Kona, Hawaii, called. The next adventure would be meeting "the love of his life," Pamela, who became his wife. They had 33 years of life together. Their adventure in Sandpoint started in 1993, creating Northwest Handmade and becoming an integral part of the community.
Dan’s craftmanship is reflected in the many pieces of furniture that will be enjoyed for generations to come. He was all about “making memories,” which was seen in his frequently gathering people together, dressing up in costumes, sharing laughter and a spark for life. Many people knew him as the local Sandpoint pirate, who had a small pirate sailing ship that took children each summer adventuring on the "high seas" of Lake Pend Oreille from City Beach, generously offering pirate treasures.
In addition to his visible persona, he quietly worked behind the scenes, giving selflessly to those in need without recognition. One of his expressions that backed his mentoring, “creative hands expand the mind,” spilled over into his own life.
When Alzheimer’s became part of his life, he didn’t allow it to label him. He continued sharing and living his dream. Some sharing would be with community groups of the Inland Northwest, helping to bring Alzheimer awareness as a fully lived experience.
The pirate boat will continue thanks to Mike Elliot. Donations accepted in place of flowers at truselfpassage.com.
