Man jailed after threatening law enforcement officers

A Montana man is facing numerous charges after law enforcement accused him of threatening several officers following an incident at a local campground.
Jason Alen Dern is set to be arraigned Monday, June 15, on two felony counts of intimidation and four misdemeanors, including obstruction and threats to inflict injury.
Dern is currently being held on $100,000 bail in the Lincoln County Detention Center.
Charging documents indicate Dern called Eureka Dispatch which transferred the call to county sheriff Sgt. Clint Heintz at about 1:46 p.m. Wednesday, May 20. They spoke for about 18 minutes in a recorded call and Heintz learned Dern was upset after an unidentified law officer went to his campsite at the Tobacco River Fishing Access and threatened to evict him due to the days he was at the campsite. The unidentified officer also told Dern his personal items would be towed.
Heintz reported that Dern was angry because no one would help him after calls to the U.S. Forest Service, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and U.S. Border Patrol. Dern also said he complied with camping regulations that limit stays to 16 days.
Then, Dern allegedly made a series of profanity-laced threats to kill law officers who may respond to his location.
In one of the statements, Dern allegedly said, “I guarantee you, I guarantee you, and I want you to hear this-I don’t give a (profanity) if it’s recorded-you come down there after me abiding by the laws, of this State and this Nation, and you try to take my shit, I will kill every (profanity) one of you. Do you hear that?”
After Dern allegedly said he had a 10 mm firearm, Sgt. Heintz said he didn’t want anyone to get hurt and sought more time to find out the identity of the officer and connect him to the appropriate agency.
Heintz got ahold of USFS officer Vaughn and learned the federal officer spoke to Dern’s girlfriend at the campsite while Dern was on the phone with her. When Heintz tried to call Vaughn’s superior, Capt. Will Chambers, he learned Dern was on the phone with Chambers.
Chambers and Dern argued about the stay limit, then Dern allegedly threatened federal officers’ lives, saying he “will kill every one of you. Every single (profanity) one of you.”
According to Heint’s report, Capt. Chambers tried to explain the laws to Dern and that he exceeded them by more than 30 days.
Dern’s alleged response was, “Come down, try to take my (profanity), I will kill every single one of you.”
Heintz provided mental health resources after Dern indicated an interest in them, but it did nothing to calm the accused.
Dern allegedly made several more calls to emergency and non-emergency lines, screamed profanities at dispatchers and threatened to kill law enforcement officers and their famillies.
In Sgt. Heintz’s report, Dern pled guilty to felony reckless endangerment in 2013 in North Dakota and was charged with reckless endangerment/domestic violence, interference with 911, criminal mischief and endangering by fire or explosion.
Court records indicate Dern had some traffic violations between 2018 and 2022 in Flathead County. He also sought three temporary orders of protection, two of which were denied.
