SANDPOINT — A male in his 30s was struck by a train while attempting to use the tracks as a shortcut from one side of the roadway to the other, Sandpoint Police Chief Corey Coon said.

The man, whose name and residence are being withheld, was transported by ground ambulance to Selkirk Fire's Sagle station where it was met by LifeFlight for transportation to Kootenai Health for treatment, according to Selkirk Fire officials.

Coon said the male was awake and alert following the incident but he did not have information on the individual's condition or the extent of his injuries.

Coon reminded residents that railroad tracks and railroad property are dangerous areas and should not be used as shortcuts across traffic corridors or for recreational activities.

While it may appear convenient to cross tracks or access nearby waterways from railroad property, city officials said doing so can place individuals at significant risk of serious injury or death.

"Trains can approach quickly and quietly, and they are unable to stop within a short distance," Coon said. "For your safety, always use designated crossings and remain off railroad tracks and railroad bridges unless authorized to be there."

Responding to the incident were Sandpoint Police officers, Sandpoint Fire crews and emergency medical personnel.

The incident remains under investigation, and no additional information is being released at this time.
