Glacier Art Museum presents a new solo art exhibition, “Our Sometimes Home: April Werle.” The museum hosts a preview reception with the opportunity to meet the artist on Thursday, June 18, from 5-7 p.m. It’s free for members or $10 at the door and includes live music provided by Cellist Lee Zimmerman. The exhibition will be on view from June 19 to Sept. 26.
Missoula-based artist April Werle presents a contemporary, multi-media installation and exhibition at the museum, combining murals painted by the artist, recent paintings, and video projections. Inspired by family memories and 1990s-2000s American pop TV, as well as her biracial experience growing up in Montana, Werle’s work references images and cultural narratives that portray a promised version of the idealized American life. Windows, mirrors, and screens are often seen in her work as reflective surfaces, as well as barriers within her narratives. Distorted space and color placement bring attention to the possibility that these depicted moments, even those of grief and escapism, may be romanticized. Werle’s acrylic on stained and whitewashed wood paintings are an exploration of memory and the evolving awareness of identity.
