Longtime Hungry Horse News editor Chris Peterson was honored Friday, June 5 with a surprise gathering of family, friends and colleagues at the former Glacier Gateway Elementary in Columbia Falls, now the Columbia Falls Kids Foundation building.
The event was planned and organized by Freedom Bank President Don Bennett, who wanted to acknowledge Peterson’s work as a photographer and editor.
“Week after week, season after season, Chris climbs the trails of Glacier National Park and the mountains that surround us,” Bennett said. “He rises before sunrise, endures weather, mosquitoes, steep climbs, and long miles so that the rest of us can experience the beauty of this remarkable place through his words and photographs.
“Just as importantly, Chris understands that local journalism isn’t about taking sides; it’s about serving the community and helping people understand one another in a balanced manner. That commitment has made the Hungry Horse News more than a newspaper; it has made it an important part of the fabric of this community. Chris is also a devoted husband, father, dependable friend, and someone who quietly strengthens this community in ways most people never see. He does it all with humility, kindness, integrity and grace. For his dedication to telling the stories of this place and preserving the character of our community, I can think of no one more deserving of recognition than him.”
Peterson thanked the folks and family at the gathering for their support over his career, which is entering its 29th summer with the Hungry Horse News.
