Aitken trial continued, pending resolution

SANDPOINT — A 20-year-old man was granted a continuance to allow time for opposing parties to potentially reach a resolution for several counts of sexual abuse and rape.
Sonny Aitken, 20, was allowed a several-month continuance into mid-October for two felony cases related to sexual abuse. In his most recent charges against him, Aitken is facing one count of rape, where the victim is under 16, one count of rape where the victim is 16 and the perpetrator is at least three years older, and six counts of sexually exploitative material of a child.
In the second case, Aitken was found guilty of injury to a child. His sentencing on that case was continued to coincide with the other alleged charges.
The charges, according to court documents, relate to incidents that occurred between 2023 and 2025, when Aitken was between 18 and 20 years old. Three girls named in the cases are believed to be between the ages of 15 and 16 at the time of the alleged incidents.
The legal age of consent in Idaho is 18, where a sexual act is considered rape if the perpetrator is 18 or older and the victim is under 16, or if the perpetrator is three or more years older than the victim who’s 16 or 17.
His pretrial hearing and sentencing were delayed to late September and mid-October to allow a resolution to potentially be reached, according to defense attorney Bryce Powell.
Aitken is currently in custody at the Bonner County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Law enforcement became aware of the crimes through a misdemeanor probation visit stemming from an underage driving under the influence charge, where an officer allegedly saw inappropriate images and videos of Aitken and one of the girls. Upon further investigation, officials learned of several other alleged girls who had relations with Aitken.
He was later arrested in Boundary County in March before being transported to Bonner County.
