After two professional starts Jake Covey became a coveted pitcher, and the Minnesota Twins have signed the Glacier Range Riders’ right-hander, the local Pioneer League franchise announced Wednesday.
Covey pitched 12 innings with just two runs allowed and 14 strikeouts while winning both his starts in Kalispell. He is the 13th Range Rider to sign with a Major League organization, according to a team release, and the fourth this year.
“Even though my time here was short, it was an incredible experience and one I’ll always be grateful for,” Covey said. “The support in the Flathead Valley was unbelievable, and Glacier Bank Park was one of the best environments I’ve pitched in.”
Covey finished his collegiate career last spring at NCAA Division II Concordia-Irvine, where in two seasons he threw 163 innings with 188 strikeouts, nine complete games and 14 wins. He posted a 3.03 earned-run average.
Last summer he threw 11 innings in the California Collegiate League, allowing no earned runs for the Orange County Riptide.
The Glacier Range Riders are an MLB Partner League team. They begin a nine-game home stand on Friday with a game against the Missoula PaddleHeads at 6:35 p.m. at Glacier Bank Park.
