As we age, some of us experience a loss of appetite and other nutrition-related changes that can lead to muscle wasting, weight loss and nutrition deficiencies. This is also known as “anorexia of aging,” and it affects about one-quarter of the elderly.

As we age, our sense of taste and smell can be blunted, making foods seem bland and less appealing. A decline in physical activity and metabolism can make one feel less hungry and consume fewer calories.

Planning regular mealtimes and snacks helps our bodies to trigger hunger signals, and spacing mealtimes further apart can help stimulate appetite. Another option is to try small frequent meals throughout the day instead of three big meals.

An increase in daily physical activity also is a key factor in stimulating appetite, improving digestion and can elevate mood. (From the National Council on Aging website).

The center hosts bingo at 2 p.m. June 20. Gentle Yoga is Wednesdays at 1 p.m. ($5); bring your own mat.

Everyone is welcome at our meals (young and old). Come enjoy a delicious meal and good conversation. If you want a take-out meal, please call 406-745-4462 by 10 a.m. on Tuesday and Friday and by 2 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday; lunch is served at noon Tuesday and Friday and 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Menus for the month are available in the entryway.

The main dishes for the upcoming week include Salisbury steak, Friday, June 19; pizza, Tuesday, June 23; and chicken enchiladas, Friday, June 26. Milk is available at all meals.

Our senior center is available for rent; call for information. If you have questions about obtaining Elder Commodities, call or stop by for information and an application.
