CHRISTIANS: Which sect deserves victory?

This letter is in response to the June 5 letter titled “Christians: If the shoe fits.”

My first experience with the division among Christians was when I went to a Christian school in first and second grade. I can still go back and see myself deep in thought over what I had just heard. I can still remember looking at my teacher when she made a statement that has stuck with me.

She told the class that if we visited another church, that was a venial sin; yet if we participated in their services, that was a mortal sin. I can still remember trying to contemplate being burnt every second for eternity.

Years later I learned of the horrors the Catholics and Protestants inflicted on each other in Ireland. Recently, when Christian Russia invaded Christian Ukraine, the Russian priests were alongside the troops. Now God is being called upon for victory by both sides in the Iran war.

Apply empathy for all people to the word “victory.” Mark Twain put the word “victory” in its true perspective when he wrote the War Prayer — a good read at any time, let alone at a time of war.
