After a full and active life, Jean Steven McVicker, 96, passed away comfortably on January 20, 2026, with her children by her side.

Jean was born on July 22, 1929, in Kearney, Neb. She grew up in Nebraska, attended Lincoln High School, then Stephens College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). She met Dwight Sidney "Sid" McVicker Jr. at UNL, and they married in 1951. Jean and Sid raised three children as they followed his career through Lincoln, Omaha, Sioux City, Iowa; Kansas City, Kan.; and Chicago to La Cañada, Calif. After Sid’s passing in 1997, Jean married Donald Spomer in 2003, and they moved to Rancho Mirage, Calif., in 2010. With Don’s passing in 2019, she moved to Whitefish.

She loved to travel and developed a career as a travel agent. Arranging travel and organizing tours gave her great satisfaction and fulfillment. Her world travel bulletin board was covered with pins representing places she had visited. A favorite was Club Cascadas in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which she visited regularly for forty years, often with family and friends.

Jean’s life revolved around her family, which gave her great joy. She had a gift for cultivating friendships, and she thoroughly enjoyed and actively participated in many activities and organizations. Jean supported her children’s interests and activities, did volunteer work and was involved in the La Cañada Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, La Cañada city government, the La Cañada Tournament of Roses Association, the Tea & Sympathy group, the University of Nebraska Alumni Association, Californians for Nebraska, Stephens College Alumni Association and Board of Curators, the Whitefish Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, PEO and PEO International.

She had a genuine interest in others and loved keeping up with old friends, attending social events, and organizing parties and get-togethers.

Jean is survived by her children, Scott, Craig and Marcy, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson. She is loved and will be missed.

A Celebration of Life is planned for July 22 at the Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
