The Montana Department of Transportation has finalized design plans for a roundabout at the intersection of Batavia Lane and U.S. 2, with construction slated to begin next year.  

The project is expected to open for contractor bids in early 2027, and officials are negotiating right-of-way with nearby landowners.  

A road safety audit conducted by the Federal Highway Administration in 2014 determined the intersection needed safety improvements. Multiple crashes at the intersection and near-miss accidents at the pedestrian crosswalk on U.S. 2 near Smith Valley School were noted in the audit.  

High-speed right-hand turns onto Batavia Lane to access an area gas station, obstructed views and confusing signage were also cited as safety concerns by the state transportation agency.  

A 2016 traffic study deemed a roundabout the best solution for reducing vehicle speeds, accommodating the large trucks that pass through the intersection and improving pedestrian access.  

The state Department of Transportation partnered with engineering consultant Rober Peccia and Associates on the project.  

The two entities will continue to work with the nearby Smith Valley School, Kelly Rae’s gas station, Smith Valley Fire Department, Montana Motor Carriers and the Montana Logging Association to ensure the design meets their needs, state officials said.  

Members of the public were able to attend an open housing in February 2025 to provide input on the conceptual design.
