Grouse Mountain Lodge is undergoing renovations and additions through next summer, culminating in a new name in 2027: Hotel Whitefish.

The hotel will remain open as Grouse Mountain Lodge during the transition, with “the full Hotel Whitefish experience launching in summer of 2027,” according to the hospitality group Pursuit. The project is part of the company’s broader plan to deploy more than $300 million into growth projects across its portfolio by 2030.

Ryan Tomm, general manager of Grouse Mountain Lodge, said the lodge has always been a landmark in Whitefish, and during this reinvestment in the property, the company wants to honor that legacy and bring it into the future.

“As Grouse Mountain Lodge evolves into Hotel Whitefish, a refreshed, mountain lodge experience rooted in Whitefish, we chose a new name to support the next chapter,” he said.

Grouse Mountain Lodge, located on U.S. 93 next to the Whitefish Lake Golf Club, opened in 1984. Pursuit Attractions and Hospitality, which was then Glacier Park Inc., purchased the property in 2011.

Nearly everything at Grouse Mountain Lodge is getting a refresh — a new look for the guest rooms, an updated outdoor sitting area and dining space at Logan’s Bar & Grill and a renovation of the pool, hot tub and sauna area.

Construction and design are being carried out by Cushing Terrell, Martel Construction and Frank Architecture and Interiors. Phase one is currently underway, while phase two is scheduled to begin in the fall.

Under construction is an 8,250-square-foot event center, which is set to open in September, according to Rob Spence, vice president of Glacier Park Collection by Pursuit.

He said the site has always hosted weddings and other events during the summer, so they saw an opportunity to put something more permanent in the same area.

“We’re very fortunate to have the location to be able to do that. I mean, the location always worked — it just wasn't for four seasons,” Spence said.

The event center has a spacious back-of-house area, including a large kitchen and storage room. It’s able to accommodate up to 250 guests for banquets, 300 people in theater-style seating and 350 for standing receptions, according to the company.

It is complemented by an outdoor ceremony site, which has the capability for an outdoor bar and barbecue. Combined with the existing conference rooms, the center brings the total event space to 16,800 square feet across the property.

Tomm said other services at the hotel make it easy to host large groups.

“We have state-of-the-art AV equipment, a shuttle service from the airport and train station. We've got the guest rooms, we've got our events team that plans as well,” Tomm said. “That's really what's special about coming to Grouse Mountain Lodge, you don't have to hire a bunch of vendors on top of everything else.”

A theme of warm colors, dark green, brown, gold and red, is present throughout the renovations in the lodge and event center.

These modern, but cozy twists on what Spence calls “Whitefish charm” are especially prevalent in the updated guestrooms. So far, there are 72 refreshed guestrooms open in the south wing featuring artwork of skiing, golfing, Big Mountain and the beauty of Northwest Montana.

Downstairs, crews are finishing up the last renovations on the pool, hot tub and outdoor sauna. Tomm said the area is expected to open in early July.

There are also updates coming to Logan’s Bar & Grill restaurant and the popular patio area in phase two of the renovations. Spence said the patio will become more inclusive with the restaurant by moving up the lower patio area and enclosing it to create a larger space that can be enjoyed three seasons out of the year.

Logan’s kitchen will partially be on display, where guests can see their steak being seared while they sit in a mid-century modern-inspired dining area.

Spence said the restaurant has always been a communal gathering place.

“Whether it's a reception, or a group coming here after golf, or the subdivision gathering. It’s very social and we are going to build on that from the types of seating that we have, whether it’s the patio or in the restaurant, for people to be able to really come with groups and socialize,” Spence said.

Keeping in line with the communal atmosphere, Spence said there is one feature that won’t change in the upcoming renovations.

“The big fireplace in the lobby stays. That's been a key feature [of the lodge] ... which again is another very popular gathering place,” he said.

The 144-room property will continue to welcome visitors during the phased transition.
