Pedestrian bridge needs to be kept open
Bonner County Daily Bee | UPDATED 4 days, 10 hours AGO
It is unnecessary to completely close the pedestrian Long Bridge pending assessment, planning and repair of damaged infrastructure.
Human traffic will not cause a sudden collapse, that will happen with time and will be in certain areas that can be avoided. Extend the closure of the last couple of weeks to keep users away from the affected areas and allow the bridge to be used in the center only to accommodate the many people who rely on it for daily transportation until repair can be completed.
If this does not happen, people will move the barriers and use the entire bridge. Also, in consideration for the obvious concern of chunks falling off, wouldn't a more pressing worry be for boaters going under?
In addition, should it truly be impossible for people to access the pedestrian Bridge by bike they WILL use the vehicle Bridge. Lowering the speed limit through Sagle would be advisable. Not only for the safety of bikers but for the safety of the millions of travelers who use that highway. You may have noticed several fatalities this spring which could have been avoided were the speed limit appropriate for that very busy, congested area.
I addition I would like to publicly express that I absolve ITD and the state of Idaho of all liability of my safety while on the pedestrian Long Bridge from this day forward.
