The mayor of Whitefish filed a $267 claim against the city in a dispute with the building inspector over placement of a sign. The issue was thoroughly discussed at a council work session. No action was taken. Mayor Carroll Amass, a business partner in the new Jimmy Lee's Restaurant on Highway 93 South, claimed that an error by the building inspector cost him the money. City Building Inspector Harry Berg stopped the installation of a new sign pole in front of the restaurant, saying it was too close to the right of way by about three feet. Amass claim that Berg had pointed out exactly where to put the pole, but after the hole had been dug, the cement was on the way and a sign installer standing by, he ordered it moved back. The additional cost was $267, Amass told the council.

Iron Horse developer Pat Donovan saw the light at the end of the tunnel after City Council voted 3-2 for the final approvement of his subdivision plan. But some absent council members might have been seeing red. The vote to approve the neighborhood plan came after months of meetings, changes and discussion. However, the final decision took less than 15 minutes. The vote came despite requests by absent council members to table the final decision until they could attend. Jan Metzmacher and Ken Williams were not at the meeting. Councilor Andy Feury was disappointed with his colleagues for blatantly disregarding this request. “I think it's a matter of common courtesy,” Feury said.

Claiming lax enforcement of Whitefish lakeshore regulations threatens the entire process, the chairman of the Whitefish Lake and Lakeshore Protection Committee submitted to the City Council several “steps” to remedy what he calls an “imminent crisis.” “Unfortunately, a lax violation policy of recent years has led to an increase in violations,” Jim Stack told Whitefish City Council members June 19. Stack blames the situation in part on turnover of personnel at the new Whitefish Planning Office, support by temporary planning staff and “handling of violations without a firm established violation policy.”

Jonny Sapa’s season debut on the mound for the Glacier Twins will be one to remember. The Legion Baseball ace tossed a no-hitter against Mission Valley in his first outing of the year. Sapa has been sidelined for most of the spring with an ankle injury. Sapper retired 16 of the last 17 batters he faced to complete a six strikeout, zero walk, no hitter in the Twins 2-1 win against the Mariners at Memorial Park. “Everything he was throwing, his fastball, his curve, it was all around the plate,” Twins head coach Bob Rupp said. “He was very commanding. Everything he threw was working and the guys played good defense behind him.”
