SANDPOINT — As part of the fundraising effort to send the Sandpoint Strikers 2013 Girls team to the U.S. Club Soccer National Cup, the organization will be hosting an exhibition match on Saturday at War Memorial Field.
The Sandpoint Legends, a team comprised of local collegiate and semi-pro players put together by the Strikers, will be taking on the Coeur d'Alene Idahoans on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille on Saturday, June 27, at 6 p.m.
Residents will recognize many of the faces playing for the Legends, including Dan Anderson, current head coach of Sandpoint High School's boys' soccer team, Evan Dickinson, a SHS graduate and College of Idaho star, and more.
Entry to the event is free, but attendees will be able to make donations at the gate and purchase concessions throughout the game that will support the 2013 Girls team's trip to Nationals.
The 2013 Girls team qualified for the national tournament on May 29, thanks to a 2-0 victory over the Idaho Inferno, the Idaho Premier League Champion, in Boise. The Strikers are set to head to Denver, Colo., for the tournament in mid-July before the team plays a game a day for, hopefully, a week straight.
Sandpoint's head coach, Adam Tajan, said that this is the first time that the team has qualified for Nationals in the club's history. He added that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the girls, who will be taking center stage and facing high-quality teams from across the country.
The game is a part of the organization's fundraising efforts to help reduce the cost burden on families. Those who can't make it but are still looking to support can Venmo the club at @sandpoint-soccer or send an email to [email protected].
