St. Ignatius Seniors: Older adults need to stay hydrated
Theresa Yares | Lake County Leader | UPDATED 23 hours, 15 minutes AGO
With the warm weather months ahead of us, it is important to stay well hydrated.
Older adults are at high risk for heat-related illnesses and dehydration. Aging reduces the body’s thirst sensation and ability to regulate body temperature.
Seniors should focus on water-dense foods, and consider limiting beverages that are high in sugar, caffeine, sodium and alcohol.
Fruits and vegetables that are over 80% water are good sources to supplement fluid intake. Watermelon, cucumbers, lettuce, grapes, oranges, celery, strawberries, tomatoes and cantaloupe are good hydration sources.
Drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you are thirsty to take a drink. Carry a water bottle with you and keep it filled. If you are on fluid restriction or on water pills, ask your doctor how much you should drink during hot weather.
Wear a hat when outside, use sunscreen, and wear lightweight, loose clothing. (From CDC and NIH websites)
