LEGION BASEBALL: Lums split at Utah tourney

HYRUM, Utah — Tanner Franklin’s two-run single highlighted a five-run first inning as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen AA beat the Laramie Rangers 18U 9-3 in pool play Friday at the Western Invitational at East Park. 

Later Friday, the Lums fell 10-0 to the Mountain Crest Trappers of Hyrum at Mountain Crest High, and finished 1-2 in pool play. 

Evan Huss went 3 for 4 and scored two runs in the first game for Coeur d’Alene (6-10).  

Jack Pierce, Malcolm MacNiven and Aven Adams had two hits each for the Lums. 

Asa Morton and Trevor Booze combined to strike out five and allow five hits. 

In the second game, Coeur d’Alene had eight hits, but left 12 on base in the shutout. The Lums trailed 2-0 before the Trappers AA (14-4) ended it with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth.  

Huss had two hits for Coeur d’Alene. 

Coeur d’Alene is scheduled to play the Rigby Mustangs 18U today at 10:30 a.m. PDT.

Northern Lakes splits, just misses semis 

IDAHO FALLS — The Northern Lakes Mountaineers A lost to the Idaho Falls Tigers 18U 8-7, then beat the Kimberly Bulldogs 18U, both at Frontier Field, to finish 2-1 in pool play at the East Idaho Invitational.  

Northern Lakes (12-3) just missed qualifying for the semifinals, and will wrap up tourney play today at noon PDT vs. Idaho Prime at Frontier Field. 

In the first game, Northern Lakes tied the game at 3 in the top of the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles by Nate Beardsall and Matthew Junkin. After a pair of walks, Gage Tenney’s two-run double put the Mountaineers up 5-3.  

Idaho Falls (17-5) took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Northern Lakes scored twice in the seventh and had the tying run at third, before a flyout ended the game. 

In the second game, Gage Haines went 3 for 4 with a triple, two doubles and two runs scored for Northern Lakes in the win over Kimberly (7-11). Parker Byrd was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored, Dane Perkl 2 for 3 with three runs scored, Jake Larcher 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Mountaineers.

SPOKANE — The Cardinals were blanked on four hits by USA Prime INW 18U at Whitworth University. 

Recent Coeur d’Alene High grad Bam Fenter went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs for USA Prime. Another former Viking, Gavin Helms, was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the win. 

Prairie (9-10-1) is scheduled to play VeloTech 18U today at 10:30 a.m. at Gonzaga University’s Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.
