LEGION BASEBALL: Lums finish second at Utah tourney

HYRUM, Utah — The Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen battled into the championship game before finishing second at the Western Invitational on Saturday.  

Coeur d’Alene beat the Rigby Mustangs 18U 7-2 in the semifinals at Mountain Crest High. 

In the championship game, the Lums lost 7-0 to the Burley Green Sox A at East Park. 

Coeur d’Alene (7-11) finished 2-3 at the tourney in northern Utah. 

“It was a long weekend and our boys fought hard to the end,” Coeur d’Alene coach Sean MacNiven said. “They worked together as a team and made us coaches proud.” 

Against Rigby (12-9), Jack Pierce went 2 for 4 for Coeur d’Alene, with a solo homer in the sixth and three RBIs. Aven Adams and Logan Strimback each had three hits for the Lums. Strimback had an RBI triple in the seventh. 

Asa Morton, Pierce and Colton Nordman each had run-scoring singles in a four-run third. 

JD Davenport went the distance on the mound for the Lums, scattering seven hits and striking out four. 

Against Burley, the Lums were held to two hits by Ike Redder, who struck out three and walked one. 

Next up for the Lums is the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic. Coeur d’Alene is scheduled to play a pair of pool-play games at 4:30 and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Thorco Field.

SPOKANE — Alec Finn hit a two-run double in the third for the Prairie Cardinals, who fell to VeloTech 18U at Gonzaga University’s Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field. 

Isaiah Kearney had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for Prairie (9-11-1), which is scheduled to play the Baden Islanders Upperclass 18U today at 10:30 a.m. at Whitworth.

IDAHO FALLS — Parker Byrd went 2 for 3 and drove in a pair of runs as Northern Lakes (13-3) finished 3-1 at the East Idaho Invitational at Frontier Field. 

Northern Lakes is scheduled to travel to St. Maries on Monday for a doubleheader.
