Bonner County Daily Bee | UPDATED 1 day, 6 hours AGO
Beloved Richard Allan Kelly, age 72, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 19, 2026.
He was born in Portland, Oregon on December 12, 1953, to Jacqueline and Alan Newby and adopted by Harry P. Kelly, who he felt was his true father.
He was a lifelong Portland resident before moving to Idaho in 2004 where, with his wife, they built their dream home and owned and operated the Hoodoo Creek Café and Kelly's Vay Mart until 2016.
His brave, distinguished service in the Air Force and Army spanned 1971 to 1977. After discharge, he began his career with United Parcel Service, retiring in 2001.
He married Karen (Witzig) in 1983 and they raised three sons, building a life grounded in love, partnership, and family. Rick was the heart and rock of the family — dependable, tenacious, and loving.
Rick enjoyed sports, both playing and watching.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Karen; sons, Craig (Nicole), Richard (Heather), and Bradley (Mindy); and 11 grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
A private family internment is planned, with a celebration of life at a future date.
