Glacier National Park announced Monday afternoon  that the entire Many Glacier Valley was closed due to flooding, including the campgrounds and hotels.

The park had already pre-emptively closed the alpine section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road on Sunday at 2 p.m. because of the storm that was expected to roll in.

Heavy rains came shortly thereafter, and the Sun Road is now closed from Avalanche Creek on the west side to Sun Point on the east side. The closure had been farther up the road on the east side, but water and debris over the highway had forced the park to close farther down.

Glacier saw widespread heavy rain Sunday into Monday morning, but by Monday afternoon, the sun was shining in Columbia Falls, but skies were still threatening, and rain is in the forecast through Tuesday.

Seventy-two hour rainfall totals have been impressive for the higher terrain, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Messina. West Flattop saw 4.3 inches; Goat Haunt 5.6 inches and Many Glacier 3.6 inches. West Glacier has seen 3.23 inches. The Noisy Basin Snotel in the Swan Range saw 6 inches of rain.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the west side of Glacier and for Swiftcurrent Creek on the east side of the park.

The weather should improve dramatically by Wednesday with warming temperatures and drier weather.

This story has been updated to reflect the entire valley is now closed.

The rain is beneficial, however. Southwest Montana has been in an extended drought and should see about an inch of rain from the storm. Summer rains are also critical in preventing wildfires.
