STATE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Brock's perfect finish ... Coeur d'Alene junior caps 44-0 season with 6A title; Post Falls second in 6A, Vikings third; Kellogg second in 3A

NAMPA — Coeur d’Alene junior Brock Armstrong has 44 reasons to smile today.

Among those is his second state 6A championship, helping the Vikings to a fourth-place finish.

Oh, and that perfect season.

Armstrong pinned Kuna senior Beau Steel in 3 minutes, 11 seconds in the 190-pound final to finish 44-0, adding his second title after winning at 165 last year.

“I just tried to keep each match the same,” Armstrong said. “I didn’t worry about doing something special. But going undefeated, it’s the culmination of the work my coaches and teammates have put into it. It was a complete team effort, and I wouldn’t be where I’m at without my coaches and teammates.”

After finishing runner-up twice, Post Falls senior Damion Hamilton knew it was now or never in his 165-pound final match with Brakken Johnston from Highland of Pocatello.

The now feels a lot better.

“I just had to get it done,” said Hamilton, who pinned Johnston in 3:22 for his first title. “There was really no other exception. I feel that God made me get second twice for a reason.”

To celebrate, Hamilton, who has committed to wrestle at North Idaho College, cut loose.

“I had five slices of pizza, a bunch of donuts and a full Arizona Iced Tea,” Hamilton said. “I'm really putting on the weight.”

Post Falls sophomore Tristan Mendenhall notched his first title with a 3-2 win over Burke Blue from Centennial of Boise at 106 pounds.

“It’s always a good match with him,” Mendenhall said. “I was just ready to leave it all on the line today and try my best.”

Post Falls, last year's champions, finished second with 230.5 points in coach Jeremy Zender’s second year as coach.

Meridian won comfortably with a state-record 364.5 points. Madison of Rexburg was third with 213.5, and Coeur d’Alene had 206.

“We had a great tournament,” Zender said. “We’re excited for the kids. Meridian, it’s hard to compete with those kids. Madison, Coeur d’Alene and us, it was a battle until the end and we were able to get the second-place trophy.”

Coeur d’Alene senior Rocco White notched his first title with an 11-5 win over Tobias Guillen of Meridian in the 113-pound final.

“I just felt good all weekend,” said White, who was third at 98 pounds at state in 2024. “It almost felt like I was wrestling in slow motion all weekend. When I had my hand raised, it felt amazing and almost didn’t feel real.”

Sophomore Micah Miller (second at 98), senior Justus Peregrina (second at 120), sophomore Nash Larsen (fifth at 120), junior Dominic Prangley (third at 144), sophomore Logan Nitti (second at 150) and sophomore Drake Speelman (fourth at 190) placed for Coeur d’Alene.

“We just barely missed out on third, but our guys wrestled awesome,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat, in his 25th season as coach. “Our guys wrestled awesome all weekend. We’ve got no complaints and they did everything we asked them to do. Logan, making the finals out of nowhere and Dominic battling back for third after losing his first match, it was awesome to see. Rocco was outstanding, Brock was Brock and Peregrina ran into a stud in the finals. This team has come a long way. They’ve really done an awesome job.”

Senior James Vincent was runner-up at 215 for Lake City, which finished 13th with 49 points.

Senior Tucker Bridwell (fifth at 165), senior Josh Macdonald (sixth at 157) also placed for the Timberwolves.

5A

Lakeland junior Carson Leonard, bidding for a three-peat, fell in the championship match at 126 pounds for the Hawks, who finished fifth with 155 points, two points shy of a trophy (Blackfoot was fourth with 157).

Leonard lost 7-1 to Ayden Tokita of Skyline High of Idaho Falls. Junior Zach Teal, also looking for his second straight title, fell 8-4 to Krew Keller of Preston in the 106-pound final.

Freshman Cruz Knopp (third at 106), freshman Colby Adams (fourth at 113), senior Cole Cooper (fifth at 144), junior Gage McWatters (third at 175) and freshman Emmit Rivadeneira (215) also placed for Lakeland.

Jeramiah Palmer (190) and Jackson Holman (215) were runners-up for Sandpoint, which finished seventh with 106.5 points.

Sophomore Tyler Wood (fourth at 106), sophomore Zak Wood (fifth at 126) and sophomore John Holman (fifth at 165) also placed for Sandpoint.

Minico of Rupert won the team title with 189 points. Defending champion Bishop Kelly of Boise was sixth with 125.5 points.

4A

Bonners Ferry junior Taylor Dodd won his second straight state title at 285 pounds, beating Caleb Carpenter of Buhl 5-0 in the championship match.

Timberlake senior Wyatt Carey finished runner-up for the third straight year, falling to Homedale’s Trevor Paynter by a 5-4 decision in the 113-pound final.

Junior Colton D’Avanzo (fifth at 106), junior Jacob Rade (fourth at 120), junior Gage Haines (fourth at 132), sophomore Parker Cathey (fifth at 144), junior Chris Schmidt (fifth at 157), senior Carter Loutzenhiser (fourth at 175) and junior Archer Higgins (sixth at 285) also placed for Timberlake, which finished seventh with 144 points. Snake River won the team title with 290.5 points.

3A

Kellogg junior Colton Storey won his second straight state title, beating Jack Willie of Malad by pin 3:28 into the 113-pound final.

Freshman Nayton O’Neill (fourth at 106), sophomore Lowden White (sixth at 106), junior Kevin Watson (third at 113), senior Johnny Stovern (fourth at 120), sophomore Carsun Hinkelmann (third at 126), senior Chase Scribner (second at 144), senior Jayce Haynes (third at 150) and senior A.J. Peak (fifth at 215) also placed for the Wildcats, who finished second with 176 points.

Junior Kelby Harvey (champion at 144), senior Zach David (champion at 150) and senior Aiden Yearout (second at 165) led St. Maries, which finished tied with New Plymouth for third with 122 points.

As a sophomore, David fell to Tri-Valley's Jace Waggoner in the “blood round” (consolation semifinals). David has advanced to the finals in the next two years.

“It felt absolutely amazing to get it done after finishing second last year,” David said. “Getting revenge for losing to him (Waggoner) also felt really good. I just started to put in the work and did everything I could at 100% and just made it happen.”

Harvey also beat Scribner for the District 1-2 title on Feb. 21 at St. Maries High.

“I just flipped the switch and started putting in the extra work this year,” Harvey said. “Being in the wrestling room with my community was a big impact on me this year.”

It is St. Maries’ first team trophy since 1994, when the Lumberjacks also finished third.

“It’s a great group of kids,” St. Maries coach Dennis Humphrey said. “The work they’ve done is incredible. It’s so tough for teams like Kellogg and us to compete with the teams down here because of their size. For us to both finish in the top three, It’s incredible.”

Senior Amado Stewart was fourth at 157, senior Zack Sotin sixth at 190 and senior Rustle Brusseau sixth at 215 for St. Maries. Lakeside senior Julian Moffitt was third at 190.

Malad won the tournament with 264.5 points.

GIRLS

Post Falls sophomore Kassie Voss pinned Weiser’s Natalya Hoobery 1:14 into overtime in the finals at 235 pounds, becoming the first Trojan girls champion in program history.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Voss, who just started wrestling two years ago. “I’ve definitely have some teammates that deserved it as well. Having my coaches help me go over matches, it’s just a big team sport.”

“When she was on top, she was really savvy with her hand fighting,” Post Falls girls coach Abel De La Rosa said. “Once that girl chose bottom in OT, when we bumped her off the bat, it opened her ankle and Kassie ran over her with her body and stuck her.”

Timberlake senior Shelby Garten beat Rocky Mountain senior Elyse Asaro by a 13-7 decision to claim the 130-pound title. Garten, who finished the season 50-1, finished second last year at 126.

Post Falls sophomore Kahli Brown (second at 135), Coeur d’Alene senior Brooklyn Anderson (second at 190), Coeur d’Alene sophomore Murphee Balich (fifth at 100) and Lakeland junior Hunter Edmundson (fourth at 115) also placed.

“Kahli wrestled the No. 1 pound-for-pound girl in the state (Blackfoot’s Keanna Conrad) and took her to the brink,” De La Rosa said. “It was a really good match.”

Eagle won the girls tournament with 116 points.
