POCATELLO, Idaho — The Lumberjacks are still supreme, but the Bobcats and Grizzlies knocked down some timber as well.

Montana State’s teams were second and second, and Montana was third in both the men’s and women’s standings at the conclusion of the Big Sky Conference Indoor Track and Field championships Saturday at the ICCU Dome.

Northern Arizona was dominant again, sweeping the team titles for the sixth straight season. The Lumberjack men scored 200 points for their 14th straight Big Sky title, with MSU at 91 and UM at 75.

The Lumberjack women scored 164.5 points to 135 for MSU and 91 for Montana.

For the MSU men, Sam Ells out of Glacier High provided 12 points by finishing second in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

Area athletes contributing for the Bobcats were Ethan Anderson, a Glacier product who took seventh in the 60-meter hurdles, and Whitefish’s Talon Holmquist, seventh in the shot put.

Sprinter Karsen Beitz led the Montana men, winning the 200 in 21.09 and taking third in the 60 at 6.69. Among the placers in the 200 was Flathead product Ben Bliven, taking eighth.

Sprinter Caroline Hawkes led the MSU women, taking the 400 meters and finishing fifth in the 200. She lowered her own school record in the 400 to 52.86.

Teammate Hailey Coey, who set the Big Sky long jump record Friday, was named the Women’s Most Outstanding Performer. She was also fourth in the triple jump. Teammate Tamia Ramos was third in that triple jump.

Flathead product Hannah Perrin was sixth in the 5,000 for the Bobcat women.

Whitefish product Hailey Ells added four points with her fifth in the women’s pentathlon; her best events were the long jump and 800, taking third in both.

Preston Wysocki took third in the men’s heptathlon for MSU, during which he won the 60-meter dash and was second in the high jump.

Sprinter Callie Wilson won a pair of sprints for the Montana women, clocking a meet record 7.26 seconds in the 60 meters and 23.54 in the 200. She’s the first Grizzly to win the 60 at this meet; Loni Perkins-Judisch was the last UM athlete to win the women’s 200, doing so in 2008.

Wilson also ran the second leg on the 1,600-meter relay squad that finished second in a school-record 3:38.8. Her 22 meet points earned her Freshman of the Year honors; another first for UM.

Adding big points was Whitefish product Mikenna Ells, who took second in the 400 meters with a time of 53.75, breaking her own school record. She also ran anchor on that long relay.

Another Whitefish product, Brooke Zetooney, took fifth in the 60 at 7.47.

The meet scored the top eight places. Bigfork’s Scout Nadeau missed scoring an eighth-place point in the shot put by 2 inches.

Joining Wilson in the Big Sky record book was Idaho’s Keenan Kurtz, who won the 60 meters in 60.59.

The top finishers away the results of the other conference to see who qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, March 13-14.

The outdoor season is fast approaching: Montana hosts the Al Manuel Invitational March 27-28. It doubles as a Cat-Griz Dual.
