Dry conditions, wind drive Montana wild fires
SCOTT SHINDLEDECKER | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 week, 1 day AGO
Dry weather in Musselshell County in southcentral Montana and some untimely winds have propelled the Rehder Creek blaze to more than 4,000 acres. It was first reported Feb. 26.
Local and federal Bureau of Land Management fire crews responded to battle the fire, which is burning about 16 miles southeast of county seat Roundup.
Another blaze in the area was reported Feb. 28. Officials have not determined causes for the 31-acre Perret Fire and the Rehder Creek Fire.
The county sheriff’s office lifted evacuation orders in the Bruner Mountain area with decreased fire activity. The state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation said the Rehder Creek blaze was 75% contained.
Musselshell Co. is in a moderate drought, according to the state monitor.
In southeast Montana, an 88-acre brush fire was burning in Bighorn County. The Overlook Fire was reported Feb. 27. State and Bureau of Indian Affairs crews responded.
The Lewistown Dispatch Center also has a pair of fires, reported Feb. 26, burning more than 100 acres. The Logie Fire torched 236 acres and the Flower 872 Fire was at 120.
The Logie blaze was located about 5 miles southeast of Lohman on the High Line. Flower 872 was burning near Highway 87, 21 miles northeast of Great Falls.
The drought monitor indicates those areas are in moderate to extreme drought.
Fortunately Lincoln County and Northwest Montana, while still experiencing dry conditions, have yet to see a wildfire in 2026.
