Michael Hans Morgenstern, 92, passed away Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church with the Rev. Bob Totten officiating, with military honors.

Mike was born Aug. 31, 1933, in Vienna, Austria, to Dr. Arthur and Ella Morgenstern. He passed through Ellis Island as a youth before the family settled in Fresno, Calif.

Mike graduated from Fresno State College while in the R.O.T.C. program. He then entered the United States Air Force in 1954. Mike married Janis Millett on October 9, 1955 in Fresno. He completed flight school as a B-52 navigator. While stationed in Purdue, he completed his master’s degree in psychology and human factors in 1963. Mike later retired as a lieutenant colonel in Rapid City, S.D., in 1974.

In 1975 he earned a second master’s degree in mine engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines. He worked for Battelle Memorial Institute, first in Richmond, Wash., and later in Bainbridge Island. In 1996, he and Jan retired to Sandpoint.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, Rotary International, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Coeur d’Alene Symphony, Primetimers, Bonner County Jail Ministry, and also served as a range master. He enjoyed music, shooting, hunting, reading, skiing, tennis, sailing, and kayaking.

He is survived by his wife, Jan Morgenstern of Sandpoint; two daughters, Susan (Eric) Douglas of New Castle, Pa., and Sheryl Morgenstern (Tim Lambert) of Port Townsend, Wash.; four grandchildren, Chris, Rosie, Cameron, and Josh; two great-grandchildren, Dakota and Arbor; and one brother, Jim (Kathy) Morgenstern of Lompoc, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son Steven Morgenstern.
