PREP BOYS WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Holman, Palmer settle for silver medals at 5A state championship

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 month, 1 week AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 4, 2026 1:00 AM

NAMPA — It might not have been the "goal", but Sandpoint High seniors Jeremiah Palmer and Jackson Holman cemented their legacies at the 5A State Championship held Friday and Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center.

Palmer, wrestling at 190 pounds, and Holman, wrestling at 215 pounds, both reached their respective finals matches and picked up silver medals for the Bulldogs. Palmer, a sixth-place finisher a year ago, stepped up and won three matches — two by pin and another by a 10-2 decision over Will Adams of Wood River in the semifinals. Holman, fighting through injuries all year, put together a valiant effort, winning his opener by a 10-6 decision and his quarterfinals bout by a 9-0 decision. The standout senior, who was also runner-up a year ago, then faced off against a familiar foe in Lakeland's Emmit Rivadeneira in the semifinals, where he used a 3-point takedown and an escape in the second period to fuel himself to a 4-3 win by decision.

Sophomores Ty Wood (106), Zak Wood (126) and John Holman (165) also found themselves on the podium after gritty performances at the two-day tournament. Ty Wood was fourth, producing two wins by pin, including a pin of Nampa's Isaiah Garcia in the consolation semifinals, and a win via a 9-1 decision. Zak Wood posted a win by medical forfeit, a win by a 19-2 technical fall, and a win by pin in the fifth-place bout over Middleton's Ashton Lewis. Holman collected two wins by major decision, by scores of 12-3 and 12-1, respectively, and two wins by pin, including a defeat of Twin Falls' Daniel Johnson in the fifth-place match shortly after a pivotal reversal.

Also representing Sandpoint and grappling to multiple wins at the state tournament were sophomore Conner Brown (132) and senior William Bomba (285). Bomba had two wins by pin — both in well under one minute — and Brown picked up a 10-4 win by decision a 3-2 win by decision thanks a 3-point takedown late in the first period. Junior Caiden Addington (150), freshman Dominic Ratigan (157), sophomore Gage Martin (144) and Paden Hinds (175) all added one win apiece to the team tally for the Bulldogs, which placed seventh out 26 scoring teams with 106.5 points, just two places behind their fifth-place finish a season ago.

For Priest River, Tadhg McLaimtaig (113) and Justin Hopkins (98) took home some hardware in the 3A ranks. McLaimtaig, a freshman, placed fourth after recording a win by pin, a win by a 21-3 technical fall, and another by an 11-0 major decision. Hopkins, also a freshman, had a win by pin in his opening quarterfinals bout against Brecken Price of Malad. Sophomore Bill Rapier (144) and freshman Grady Caudill (106) both added a win by pin each — their first ever wins at state — for the Spartans, which placed 20th out of 43 teams with 33.5 points.

Bonners Ferry's Taylor Dodd won a 285-pound state championship, winning three consecutive matches by pin and his finals bout by a 5-0 decision over Buhl's Caleb Carpenter, for the Badgers, which placed 13th out of 18 teams in 4A with 46.5 points.
