I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 4, 2026 1:00 AM

NAMPA — A fifth-place finish out of 75 teams isn't too shabby. In fact, it's the best team finish by the Lady Bulldogs yet.

After a seventh-place tally in 2025, Lilli Marti (235) and Vanessa Hood (135) grabbed bronze medals, Teagan Newsom (145) grappled to a fourth-place finish, and the Sandpoint High girls wrestling team impressed once again at the All-Class State Championship tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Ford Idaho Center.

Marti won five of her six matches across the two-day tournament, winning her opener by pin before battling to four consecutive victories in the consolation bracket. The standout senior capped off her career with two wins by pin, another win by a 4-3 decision in a thrilling consolation semifinals bout, and then posted a victory by third-period pin over Eagle High sophomore Keleigh Russell-Smith in the third-place match.

Hood, a sophomore, won four of her five bouts by pin, including a second-period pin of Kuna's Jadyn Jackson in the third-place match, and Newsom, a junior, collected two wins by pin and a win by 12-7 decision over Sarah Tomlinson of Meridian in the consolation semifinals.

Also producing multiple wins were Mackenzee Donenfeld (100) and Izzy Stark (130). Donenfeld, a sophomore, had a 10-0 win by major decision and another by a 7-2 decision, and Stark, a junior, won two matches by pin for Sandpoint, which scored 74 points in total. Eagle won the team title with 116 points.

Junior Zxyloh Hull-Johnson (155) had a win by pin and sophomore Rhaelyn Schedlbauer (110) captured a victory via a 13-7 decision to round out the top performers for the Lady Bulldogs.

For Clark Fork, sophomore Summer Birch represented the Lady Cats for the second straight season, and this time, earned a fifth-place finish as she became the first state placer in school history. Wrestling at 120 pounds, Birch notched two wins by pin to start the tournament before clawing back to win a triple overtime tiebreaker match via an 8-1 tally thanks to an escape, a takedown, and a 4-point nearfall in quick succession. She then made history with a 9-5 win by decision over Rosy Weatherspoon of Fruitland in the bronze-medal bout.
