Chapman bucket lifts Eureka in Western B

PABLO — Just like they drew it up.

Brody Chapman’s tip-in off an inbounds play with 0.7 seconds left lifted Eureka to a 38-36 win over Deer Lodge in a first-round Western B Divisional boys basketball game Thursday. 

Chapman’s heroics came after Deer Lodge scored twice in the final 55 seconds to knot the score at 36-all. The Wardens’ Shawn Lombardi hit a put-back came with :09.2 left.  

Eureka then got off a baseline jumper, with the rebound going out of bounds to the Lions with under a second left. Chapman banked in the game-winner from 8 feet. He scored eight points, as did Rowan Burow. Leif Burow led the Lions with nine points. 

Kaiden Beck hit three 3-pointers and scored 19 points for the Wardens.  

Eureka (12-6) advanced to Friday’s 3 p.m. semifinal against Missoula Loyola (16-5). The three-time State B champion Rams swamped Mission 68-28 on Thursday. 

Deer Lodge (7-14) and Mission (6-13) play a loser-out game Friday at 9 a.m.

Loyola 72, Eureka girls 29 

Spencer Laird outscored Eureka by herself, netting 35 points on 14 of 22 shooting. She was 3 for 8 from the 3-point arc; Emma Laird added 12 points for the Breakers. 

Haidyn Guckenberg scored 12 points to lead the Lady Lions (7-11). 

Eureka has an 11:30 a.m. loser-out game against Anaconda, which lost to Thompson Falls 55-33 in Thursday's late game.

Loyola (19-1) takes on Thompson Falls in Friday’s 8:15 p.m. semifinal.
