PONDERAY — The Lake Pend Oreille School District Board of Trustees is set to declare a vacancy on the board Tuesday following the resignation of Zone 2 Trustee Jalon Peters.

In an e-mail sent to the district, Peters said his family is selling their home and moving to Coeur d’Alene to be closer to his work. Peters ran unopposed in last year’s election and was elected to serve a second four-year term representing the zone covering the area south of Highway 2, west of Highway 95 and south of Sagle.

“I am thankful to all of those who voted in the elections I was a part of, whether you voted for me or not,” Peters wrote in an e-mail announcing his decision. “I’m truly grateful for the election process and the time I was able to serve this community. I can say that I worked to the best of my ability to represent the constituents in Zone 2.”

Once the board declares a vacancy, LPOSD’s Board Clerk Kelly Fisher will begin the process of filling it. In the declaration, the trustees have scheduled interviews for the next trustee for April 14.

Whoever is selected to serve will complete the rest of Peter’s term until Dec. 31, 2029. Peters took time in his e-mail to thank the members for their respect throughout his time and discussions on the board.

“I am also proud of the steps our board has taken for the betterment of our community and the learning process for all students represented in our district,” Peters wrote. “I am sad to have to step down, but I’m confident in the ability of this board to continue moving in the right direction."

The LPOSD board will meet at 5 p.m. at district headquarters Tuesday, March 10.
