PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Bonners Ferry upsets top-ranked Teton to punch ticket to state title game

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 7, 2026 1:00 AM

Bonners Ferry 57, Teton 53

EAGLE — For the fourth consecutive year, Bonners Ferry is on its way to the 4A State Championship game.

Senior Peyton Hinthorn scored 13 of his team-high 23 points in the second half and grabbed a team-high three steals, senior Sulay Abubakari produced his second double-double of the tournament with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two 3-pointers and two steals, and the No. 5 Badgers upset the No. 1 Timberwolves in a 4A State Championship tournament semifinals game held Friday night at Eagle High.

Junior Ty Schrock, who played the last 15 minutes of the game with four fouls, added 12 points and four rebounds to the stat sheet for the Badgers, which limited Teton to zero first-quarter field goals as they took an early 11-3 lead. Bonners Ferry saw their lead expand to 14 points (20-6) — their largest lead of the game — when Hinthorn used some shifty footwork underneath to evade his defender and score.

Luke Nelson drove the lane early and often as he scored a game-high 28 points for Teton (21-6), which outscored Bonners Ferry 15-10 in the third quarter and were within one possession for most of the fourth quarter, but never led in the game. Bradley Brown had 10 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Timberwolves, who will face off against No. 3 Snake River (17-9) in the third-place game today.

Junior Jameson Cartwright-Kissee chipped in six points, all from beyond the arc, and junior Risten Allred registered five rebounds and a pair of assists, as did Cartwright-Kissee and Abubakari, for Bonners Ferry (14-8), which shot 87% (20-for-23) from the charity stripe in the contest and will take an eight-game winning streak into the 4A State Championship game. The Badgers, seeking their third consecutive state title, will take on No. 2 Cole Valley Christian (21-4) today at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa at 2:50 p.m. The Chargers defeated the Panthers by a score of 51-41 in their respective semifinals matchup.
