MULLAN — Rosters and coaches have been announced for Friday’s District 1 All-Star Game at the Mullan Athletic Pavilion.

The annual showcase brings senior standouts from across the Panhandle to Mullan for a fun night of hoops and camaraderie.

Kellogg girls coach Jana Nearing will lead the East girls squad, which includes Kellogg’s Dani Henrickson, Wallace’s Aubrey Birdsell and Kylee Phillips, and Mullan’s Avah Blankenship.

The game holds a special place in Nearing's heart. She was the girls' MVP winner in 1995 and now gets to coach her daughter in the contest.

"I'm excited to be a part of it," Nearing said. "It's a fun night for all of the seniors that come out to play. I'm especially excited to get to coach Dani one last time."

On the boys' side, Kellogg’s Draedan Taylor, Cayden Honnerlaw and Radley McDonald will join Mullan’s Colten Imes and Drake Wilson on the East All-Stars. The team will be coached by St. Maries’ Bryan Chase, fresh off winning the 3A state title on Saturday.

The all-star game has become a rite of passage for area players, each group eager to leave its mark.

“I played in this game a decade ago and, being from Mullan, it was exciting to play with all the guys from the other schools,” Mullan athletic director Dakota Dykes said. “This game has become a tradition for the kids and this community, and gives us an exciting opportunity to come together and play.”

The night also gives athletes a chance to set rivalries aside — or in some cases, renew them — in a unique, lighthearted setting.

“You get the chance to team up and work with both rival schools and some schools you might not play against often or at all,” Dykes said. “It’s an incredibly fun contest where scores usually run high, and athletes tend to try flashier and riskier techniques than they would in a regular-season game.”

In addition to the games, the event will feature the annual 3-point shooting contest and slam-dunk competition. After each game, an MVP will be selected and awarded a scholarship.

“Athletes tend to go above and beyond in this contest to stand out among their peers and try to clinch that MVP spot,” Dykes said. “Spectators should expect a night of stellar basketball with intermittent bouts of high-flying dunks and lights-out 3-point shooting from the best senior athletes in District 1.”

East teams will wear their home (light jerseys), while the West teams will be in their away (dark) uniforms.

The District 1 All-Star Game is set for Friday, March 13. The girls' game tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys.
