WARDEN — After a young Warden softball team battled its way to the state tournament last spring, head coach Randy Wright believes this year’s group is poised to take another step forward — and possibly much more.

“We were young last year,” Wright said. “This year we’re a lot more experienced, and that makes a big difference.”

Warden returns the core of its roster from a team that gained valuable postseason experience in 2025. Wright said the athletes have come into the new season with a clearer sense of what it takes to compete deep into May.

“My goal is always the same, to get better every day,” he said. “If we do that, the wins will take care of themselves.”

The Cougars have been training steadily as the season approaches, with Wright said he is focusing on fundamentals and consistency.

“We’ve been working on the little things,” he said. “Defense, communication, and making sure we’re doing the routine plays right. That’s what wins games.”

Wright said he has already seen noticeable growth from several players since the offseason.

“A lot of the girls put in work on their own,” he said. “You can see it in their confidence and how they’re carrying themselves.”

As the team prepares for its first home game March 17 against Lind‑Ritzville/Sprague/Washtucna, Wright said community support remains a key part of the program’s identity.

“I just want the Warden community to know how hard these girls work,” he said. “They show up, they put in the time, and they represent this town really well.”

He encouraged fans to come out and support the team as the season gets underway.

“It means a lot to the girls when people are in the stands,” he said. “It gives them energy.”

Wright expects a competitive league slate, with several teams returning strong lineups.

“There are always tough matchups in our league,” he said. “We know we’re going to have to show up ready to play every night.”

Still, he believes the Cougars have the pieces to contend.

“We want to win state — that’s always the goal,” Wright said. “But it starts with doing the work every day and trusting each other.”

As the season begins, Wright said he’s excited to see what this group can accomplish.

“They’re a great group of kids,” he said. “I’m looking forward to watching them compete.”

Local leaders say community voices shape schools, cities and trust

WARDEN — When Warden Mayor Rosaelia Martinez looked out over the audience at the April 28 Warden City Council meeting, she didn’t see empty seats. She saw neighbors. “First of all, before we start, I want to say thank you to all those that came to the meeting tonight,” Martinez said. “I know we are all busy people, and I really appreciate your input. Your time is valuable and we appreciate you being here.” That message – that showing up matters – was echoed by city and school leaders across the Columbia Basin, many of whom say public participation directly shapes decision-making, transparency and long‑term planning.

WARDEN — Warden City Council passed a kratom ban and special event permit Tuesday night. It also discussed its comprehensive plan update and an ordinance for parking regulations. Around 17 residents were in attendance, a fairly large showing for a Warden council meeting. “First of all, before we start, I want to say thank you to all those that came to the meeting tonight,” Mayor Rosaelia Martinez said. “I know we are all busy people, and I really appreciate your input because it really validates what a lot of people are hoping to achieve in the city.
