PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland softball powers up for split

ST. GEORGE — While back home their family and friends were shoveling out from a mid-March snowstorm, the Lakeland Hawks opened their season Friday in southern Utah, as temperatures climbed into the 80s.
It only took Lakeland one game to heat up.
In their second game of the day, the Hawks scored 10 runs in the first inning and beat the Juab Wasps (2-7) of Nephi, Utah, 19-2.
Kiersten Drake hit a two-run double in the big inning for Lakeland (1-1). Delilah Zimmerman, Reese Dutton and Reese Vanek each had RBI singles, and Jaiden Corbey and Katie Nave had run-scoring doubles.
Zimmerman and Ada Blakemore each finished with three RBIs for the Hawks.
Lakeland lost 11-0 to Green Valley of Henderson, Nev., in its first game, mustering three hits against the Gators, who had played six games prior to Friday.
Today, Lakeland is scheduled to play East of Salt Lake City and North Sanpete of Mt. Pleasant, Utah.

• POSTPONEMENTS
A healthy rain and snow mix forced the postponement of a majority of Friday's prep schedule.
Coeur d'Alene's scheduled baseball game against Eastlake of Sammamish, Wash., was canceled due to wet field conditions at Gonzaga's Patterson Baseball Complex in Spokane.
The Vikings are scheduled to face Gonzaga Prep today at 11 a.m. in Spokane.
A season-opening softball doubleheader pitting Sandpoint at Post Falls was postponed, with no makeup date announced.
Due to rain, St. Maries had its opening games Friday and today at a tournament in Lewiston canceled.
In addition, the District 1 All-Star girls and boys basketball games, scheduled for Friday at Mullan, were postponed and rescheduled for Thursday, with tipoff of the girls game at 5:30 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7.
A 5A Inland Empire League baseball doubleheader today between Lewiston and Lakeland, previously scheduled for Rathdrum, was moved to Church Field in Lewiston starting at noon.
A baseball doubleheader today between Post Falls and Sandpoint, scheduled for Memorial Field in Sandpoint, was also postponed with no makeup date set.
