It's been a whirlwind of just more than a year since the Coeur d'Alene-based Paradox Studios released "Recollection," a sci-fi thriller filmed on scene in the Inland Northwest.
As the film's select theatrical run comes to a close, it will screen for one last time back where it all started — in Coeur d'Alene.
"It's been a long time coming," Director Caden Butera said Tuesday. "We're excited about the next thing."
"Recollection" has been raking in awards at film festivals throughout the country, from the Spokane International Film Festival and the North Idaho Film Festival to the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival in Iowa, the Flicker's Rhode Island Vortex Sci-Fi Festival and more.
As a cherry on top of this sweet stack of awards, a distribution deal was signed with Narrative Distribution’s Persimmon Label in November. "Recollection" will be making its way around the world Thursday when it hits streaming services: AppleTV, Amazon Prime Video and Fandango at Home.
"I feel really, really excited and just thrilled to just get to this point where we get distribution," Butera said. "It's also extra cool for me because now people are getting to watch Coeur d'Alene and the local places we shot on a global scale."
"Recollection" stars Rosslyn Luke, Falk Hentschel, Cesar Garcia, Eric Roberts and Gary Graham. It was Graham's final feature role before his death in 2024.
Set in the year 2033, "Recollection" follows Kate Parker (Luke), an employee at Vitality, a corporation that governs society through mandatory memory cleansing. A system glitch returns her memories, making her a target of Vitality. She and Teddy (Hentschel) team up with Sid Dyas (Roberts) and they work to uncover the truth before Kate's identity again is lost.
"'Recollection' is suspenseful and heartfelt science fiction that is able to ground itself with the emotion at the film’s core," Persimmon’s acquisition manager Mackenzie Maguire said in a news release. "Persimmon is thrilled to be the worldwide partner for Recollection.”
Caden Butera served as director, writer and editor. His younger brother, Rylan Butera, co-wrote the story and composed the music. The project was produced by their mom, Jackie Butera, and dad Mark Butera served as executive producer.
"Recollection" is currently available for pre-order on AppleTV: https://geni.us/F9H1
A special immersive RSVP-only event will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Regal Riverstone. The event will include the full movie, composer Rylan conducting a live string quartet playing music from the film and commentary from Caden and cinematographer Max Jordan. Costumes and other movie merchandise will be up for raffle prizes. Visit paradoxstudiosco.com/recollection to pre-order "Recollection" for tickets. Android users must set up Apple accounts and download the app on desktops or laptops to pre-order.
“The main goal I have and the agenda we all have going forward is, 'What can we do to ensure that we can keep making movies in Idaho?" Caden said. "We were born and raised here, we shoot here and we want to keep that going. If 'Recollection' succeeds and people watch it, it will bring more filmmakers here. They can make a movie here, not just in L.A. I hope everyone in the artistic community has the ability to make films here."

A sudden move in 2022 closed the Garnet Cafe for about six weeks. In 2024, an electrical fire shut down the Coeur d'Alene restaurant for 10 months. As anyone in food service knows, a closed door means no customers, and no customers means no income. It's emergencies like these that led to the formation of CDAIDE. "The first time we would have utilized CDAIDE was when we were closed for the move," Garnet Cafe manager Freya Von Till said Thursday. "The move was last minute and pretty unexpected."
