PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland splits again for 2-2 start to season

ST. GEORGE, Utah — Senior Kiersten Drake tripled and doubled and drove in three runs as the Lakeland Hawks defeated the East Leopards of Salt Lake City 16-1 in their first game Saturday at Bloomington Park. 

Later Saturday, the Hawks fell 11-8 to the North Sanpete Hawks of Mt. Pleasant, Utah, to finish 2-2 in their four games in two days in southern Utah to open the season. 

Drake hit a two-run triple to highlight a 13-run second innings for Lakeland against East. She also had an RBI double in the inning. 

Abi Helmholz hit a two-run double, and Reese Vanek and Delilah Zimmerman had run-scoring doubles for Lakeland.  

Ada Blakemore hit an RBI single and a two-run single in the inning for the Hawks, and Raygen Dutton singled in a run.  

Helmholz had six strikeouts in three innings. 

East is 1-4. 

Drake had two hits for Lakeland vs. North Sanpete (7-0), finishing the day 4 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. 

Kaecee Johnson of North Sanpete struck out 11 in six innings. 

Lakeland travels to Lake City on Tuesday.

• POSTPONEMENTS

A nonleague baseball game between Coeur d'Alene and Gonzaga Prep, scheduled for Gonzaga's Patterson Baseball Complex was postponed.

Lake City's nonleague softball doubleheader at Central Valley was postponed due to wet field conditions.

Post Falls had its tennis match at Lewiston postponed due to wet weather.
