PREP BASEBALL & SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Sandpoint baseball shuts down Lewiston for season-opening sweep
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 day, 8 hours AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 18, 2026 1:00 AM
BASEBALL

SANDPOINT — That's certainly one way to start off your senior season.
Senior Dallen Williams struck out 12 batters across 6.1 scoreless frames on the mound and recorded a two-run double to right field in the sixth inning, junior Brennan Shaw went 3-for-4 with three singles, including a two-run base hit to center in the second, and bagged two stolen bases, and the Bulldogs gave first-year head coach Jesse Dunham his first career win via a shut out of the Bengals on Tuesday afternoon at War Memorial Field.
Williams also had a sacrifice fly in the first to get the Bulldogs on the board, senior catcher Coleman Inge doubled to begin the sixth, and senior Sage Medeiros chipped in an RBI single to left in the fifth frame for Sandpoint, which limited Lewiston to just four hits in the 5A Inland Empire League contest. The Bulldogs set the tone early with a 6-4-3 double play — from Parker Reichart to Mason Little to Carson Resso — in the first inning.
Juniors Jack Schriber and Resso also put together base hits and senior Soren Caprio led the way with three runs scored in what was the season opener for both teams. It's the second consecutive year the Bulldogs have bested the Bengals to start the season, with their last season-opening win coming in 2021 before that.

SANDPOINT — Bring out the brooms.
Senior Sage Medeiros flexed his 85-mile-per-hour fastball as he struck out five batters over five two-hit innings on the bump — and he got it done at the plate as well with a 2-for-3 effort, including a double and a triple — senior Parker Reichart struck out three batters across two no-hit innings in relief, and the Bulldogs beat the Bengals by an 8-run margin in Tuesday's 5A Inland Empire League nightcap at War Memorial Field.
Medeiros' two-run triple came during the Bulldogs' three-run fourth inning, and his RBI double to left field in the third ignited a four-run rally as Sandpoint took a commanding lead with their effort in the two frames. Reichart also put together a multi-hit effort, as did senior Coleman Inge, who hit an RBI single in the second to put the Bulldogs on the board, and junior Brennan Shaw.
Junior Jack Schriber doubled and seniors Soren Caprio and Dallen Williams also had base knocks in the winning effort for Sandpoint (2-0), which is off to their first 2-0 start since 2021 and will look to keep things rolling when they travel to Lakeland on Tuesday for a 5A IEL doubleheader.

SANDPOINT — It took extra innings, but Sandpoint got the job done when it mattered most.
Marlee Stevens struck out 11 batters across eight innings of work in her sophomore debut, junior Teagan Newsom compiled a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, including an RBI double that capped off a four-run eighth frame, and the Lady Bulldogs outlasted the Lady Bengals in the nightcap of a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader to force a series split on Tuesday night at Airport Park.
Senior Arah Stevens also put together a multi-hit effort that included a double and an RBI triple to deep right field in the eighth. Senior Cadence Skitbitsky launched an RBI double to left in the at-bat prior for Sandpoint, which outhit Lewiston 9 to 7 in the contest.
"Those hits came at such a clutch time, especially with the international tiebreaker [inning starts with runner on second base]," Sandpoint High head coach Leah Platt said. "Arah and Cadence were definitely leaders out there today."
Sophomore Raelyn Olsen, who doubled to begin the fourth, stole home later in the inning to get the Lady Bulldogs on the board and break the ice. Marlee Stevens accounted for the other run in the frame via an RBI groundout; she also knocked home a run in the eighth.
Adison Johnson hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to force the tie for Lewiston, which scored two more in the eighth but were shut down with runners on first and second, with Marlee Stevens striking out the final Lady Bengal batter in four pitches.
"It was a total team fight and they had each other's backs today," coach Platt noted of her team's tenacity even after a bus breakdown and a 30-minute delay to the day's games. "I could not be more proud of them. Everyone contributed from courtesy runners to people on the bench. We're hoping this is a good sign for how the rest of the season is going to go."
Sophomore Taylor Bannick recorded her first career varsity hit in the win for Sandpoint (1-1), which will carry some momentum into their 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Lakeland on Tuesday.
