SANDPOINT — Aven Adams scored the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly with two in the ninth inning as Lake City beat Lakeland 6-5 in the nonleague opener for both schools at Memorial Field on Wednesday, giving first-year Timberwolves coach Gil Pierce his first win.

“It was a great game,” Pierce said. “The boys continued to battle, which was good to see, especially in the first game out. We had some timely hits and some good execution when we needed it. We’d give up a run, but the kids just continued to battle, which was really good to see.”

Lake City took a 4-3 lead after Logan Strimback scored on an error in the top of the seventh. Brennan Jensen singled to score Colton Slife to make it 5-3 Lake City.

Lakeland tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Nate Bevacqua to score Jace Taylor to make it 5-5.

Jensen finished with two RBIs for Lake City, which faces Centennial of Boise and Rocky Mountain of Meridian in the Rocky Mountain Tournament on Friday in Meridian.

Lakeland travels to Sandpoint for a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader against the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
