Wagner’s tragic love story “Tristan und Isolde” will be shown at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish at 10 a.m. March 21.
“Tristan und Isolde” is the sixth opera to be livestreamed through the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD 2025-26 season and has a run time of about five hours and 10 minutes, including two intermissions.
Sung in German with subtitles, Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” has been called the most influential work in the history of both opera and classical music and is often described as the start of modern music. Bound in marriage to King Marke against her will, Irish princess Isolde resolves to end her life along with that of Tristan, a Cornish knight who is tasked with bringing Isolde back to Cornwall. But when a love potion is substituted for poison, the two are drawn into an all-consuming, obsessive love affair that destroys everything — and everyone — in its unstoppable path.
Based on a medieval legend, the opera is a romantic tragedy of love and death told through Wagner’s sublime music. From the opening bars of the prelude, with its famous “Tristan chord," Wagner’s is one of the most significant pieces in his repertoire.
The electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles the Irish princess Isolde in one of the ultimate roles for a dramatic soprano. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan, according to www.metopera.org. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her signature portrayal of Brangäne, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny who sings Kurwenal and bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green who makes his role debut as King Marke. The momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon. Yannick Nézet-Séguin is the music director, marking his first time leading “Tristan und Isolde” at the Met.
Exclusive behind-the-scenes content and cast interviews will follow the opera.
