SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW: Clark Fork track & field will lean on freshmen; state-qualifier Caven
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 month, 3 weeks AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 21, 2026 1:00 AM

COACHES: Phil Riley, head coach, second season; Nona Young (17'), assistant coach.
KEY RETURNERS: BOYS — Westin Caven (hurdles/jumps), sr.
KEY NEWCOMERS: BOYS — Parkour Cunningham (throws), fr.; Kellen Gilliland (sprints/throws), fr.; Kingston Hudson (sprints/jumps), fr. GIRLS — Vanessa Rogier (sprints/jumps), fr.
KEY LOSSES TO GRADUATION: GIRLS — Rachel Weymouth (sprints); Olivia Yetter (hurdles), sr.; Hannah Thompson (sprints/jumps); Kayle Berscheid (sprints). BOYS — Evrett Montgomery (sprints); Stone Koivu (throws); Austin Henson (sprints); John-Paul Dix (sprints).
OUTLOOK: Ever since graduating a large class in 2024, the Wampus Cats have struggled with numbers — although that's no surprise due to the cyclical nature of small school athletics. This year's newcomers, along with returning state qualifier Westin Caven, seem to have the program trending in the right direction again, however.
For the boys, Caven is a consistent hurdler and high jumper. The standout senior topped out at 5 feet, 8 inches in the high jump, but the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles is where he was the most impressive. He placed amongst the top five at the 2A District 1-2 Championships and the top 10 at the 2A State Championships in both events a year ago. Parkour Cunningham, competing in the discus and shot put, and Kellen Gilliland, competing in the sprints and discus, are two freshmen that were among the best at last year's middle school district championship and will need to be contributors from day one for Clark Fork.
On the girls side, the Lady Cats roster loses four seniors, including Hannah Thompson and state-qualifying hurdler Olivia Yetter (now at Lewis-Clark State College). Freshman Vanessa Rogier, already a star player in both volleyball and basketball, is the only girl out for the team this season. Her 100-and-200-meter dash times from last season will translate to the high school level immediately, and her long jump, already nearing 14 feet, will be right there as well.
COACH'S COMMENTS: "Looking forward to the 110s and 300s with him. He did phenomenal last year in the hurdles. He's put in a lot of work and is looking good early on this year." — Coach Phil Riley on Westin Caven
"He had a great eighth grade year and is coming into the season with a lot of expectations. I think he's going to follow through with it." — Coach Phil Riley on Parkour Cunningham
"Her sprint times are great and she's got a heck of a long jump coming into the season. At early practices, she's already pushing further. It will be a lot of fun watching her." — Coach Phil Riley on Vanessa Rogier
"I love the community, the kids are awesome, and I have a solid staff with Nona Young coming back as well. She has a great rapport with the team. It's nice to have a familiar face help lead the team with Westin. It's a small team (six athletes), but they'll make their mark." — Coach Phil Riley on getting ready for another year of coaching
