SPRING SPORTS PREVIEW: Sandpoint baseball looking to get back to postseason under first-year coach Dunham

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 month, 3 weeks AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 21, 2026 1:00 AM

OUTLOOK: The 2025 season came to an abrupt close last year when the Bulldogs were downed by league newcomer Lewiston by a score of 5-4 in the first round of the 5A IEL District Championship tournament. With that game in the rear view mirror, and with first-year head coach Jesse Dunham, a former Lassen College and Oregon Tech University standout, at the helm, Sandpoint is primed for a solid year ahead.

The Bulldogs lose four-time All-Inland Empire League pick Drew Lehman (now at Columbia Basin College) and a strong right-handed pitcher in Jesse Turner, but otherwise, return a majority of their starting lineup and pitching rotation, including three All-Inland Empire League selections.

Dallen Williams, a now four-year varsity contributor and a 2025 all-league selection, has been a consistent and steady force both on the mound and at the plate over the last few seasons. A year ago, Williams, a Clark College (NWAC) commit, posted a 1.54 ERA across eight appearances and struck out 23 batters over 27.1 innings of work. At the plate, he added 17 hits, including a triple and double, nine RBI and a .304 batting average.

Mason Little, also a Clark College (NWAC) commit, has led the way defensively and in the batter's box. The league's Newcomer of the Year in 2024 and an all-league selection a year ago is bound for another standout year. In 2025, he broke through a slump and finished off the year strong, slashing .355/.479/.474 while producing 27 hits, including seven doubles and a triple, 20 RBI and eight stolen bases.

Parker Reichart is another 2025 all-league pick who is returning, and is also receiving collegiate interest. The standout infielder and right-handed pitcher batted .319 to go along with 23 hits, 15 RBI and nine stolen bases during his breakthrough junior campaign.

Soren Caprio, who slashed .276/.411/.329 in 2025, Brennan Shaw, who slashed .324/.414/.394, and Carson Resso, who slashed .333/.424/.444, will all be relied on heavily in the front-end of the batting order this year. On the bump, expect Shaw (4.07 ERA), and Spokane CC commit Sage Medeiros (2.69 ERA) to take on expanded roles. Reichart will be in the mix as well for the Bulldogs, which are looking to nab their first district title and state championship appearance since the 2021-2022 season. Outfielder Jack Schriber and catcher Coleman Inge have also seen time in the starting lineup and have made significant contributions.

COACH'S COMMENTS: "For me, this is my way of giving back to baseball since I can't play anymore. It was awesome to be on a baseball field again." — Coach Dunham after the Bulldogs' season-opening sweep of Lewiston

"If they stay in the zone and stay true to who they are, we're going to do really good this year. We can't get away from throwing strikes and we have to work ahead the entire game. They've shown that early on." — Coach Dunham on his pitching staff

"We're really big this year on having team at-bats rather than selfish at-bats. They've bought into that, and everyone from the top of the order to the bottom of the order has been involved." — Coach Dunham on his batting lineup

"This group is fun to coach. They have a lot of fun on the field, but when it's time to go, they know when to shut it off. When it's go time, they lock in." — Coach Dunham on what's special about this group of players

"They are awesome. They do so much for me and I don't know what I would do without them. I'm very blessed to be in such a good spot with them by my side." — Coach Dunham on assistant coaches Don Little, Jason Shaw and Rick Klontz
