Spring is here! And with it comes nature’s great blossoming, releasing huge amounts of pollen into the air. Supporting your body naturally so that you don’t have unwanted allergies is easy if you know what to do. Acupuncture and nutritional therapy offer holistic tools to keep you healthy and strong during this beautiful season. Understanding the body and supporting it with specific nutrition can be a game changer.

When foreign proteins (like pollen and smoke particles) enter the body through the eyes, nose, and mouth, the body reacts with inflammation, extra mucus, and sneezing to help clear the allergens out of the body. Common allergy symptoms like runny nose, wheezing, excess mucus, sneezing, and watery eyes all occur when pollen and other foreign proteins contact these mucus membranes and histamines are released. Histamines are the signaling molecules that facilitate allergic reactions. That’s why over the counter medications work to suppress allergy symptoms - they are antihistamines. But they only suppress symptoms and don’t deal with the root cause of the annoying symptoms.

The allergic immune response occurs in the local areas and can be quite uncomfortable. But there is more…

When allergens contact the mucus membranes, some of them cross into the blood stream and make their way into circulation. The body moves these foreign proteins to the liver. The liver filters them out and puts them into the bile for elimination. The liver is like an oil filter in a car. When it gets congested or compromised it can’t do its job and effectively clear the allergens out of the body. When the liver is compromised, more severe allergic reactions can occur.

To decongest the liver, we use a special supplement that supports blood flow to the liver and acts as a natural antihistamine. It supports the blood filtering function of the liver and greatly improves the liver’s ability to clear foreign proteins, thus providing relief from allergy symptoms.

Acupuncture for allergies is well researched and can significantly reduce symptoms of hay fever. Acupuncture effectively reduces nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, and runny nose. It helps regulate the immune system, decreases histamine release, and calms nasal and sinus inflammation.

Consuming quercetin-rich foods (like onions, apples, and kale) and vitamin C-rich foods (citrus) naturally helps combat histamine release and inflammation. Local raw honey (1 tbsp daily) helps desensitize the immune system to local pollen over time. Turmeric with warm milk can reduce nasal inflammation.

By supporting both the immune system and the liver, you will reduce your sensitivity to seasonal allergies. Avoid sugar, processed foods, and other toxins that burden your body’s natural immunity. Take control of your health and reduce your allergy symptoms naturally.
