Last season: 6-13 (1-4 in IML)

Roster: Colson Baisden, so.; Jeremiah Becker, jr.; Kordale Burt, jr.; Tyson Dickson, so.; Ronin Hanson, sr.; Stryder Liermann, sr.; Keenan Maas, sr.; Maddox Mertzweiller, jr.; Cardon Pluid, jr.; Gavin Rider, sr.; Ty Schrock, jr.; Jacob Solt, jr.; Gordon Woelfle, fr.; Jack Woods, sr.; Brent Worley, fr.

Coaches: Tom Turpin, head coach; Chad Carle, assistant coach.

Departures to graduation: Thomas Bateman, Brody Rice

Outlook: Bonners Ferry will look to improve significantly on last year’s record, and two wins to start the season against Kellogg could provide an early confidence boost.

Veteran head coach Tom Turpin leads a varsity team made up of several age groups, with 30 total players between varsity and junior varsity.

The Badgers plan to rely on three senior starting pitchers throughout the season, which Turpin expects to be a strength.

“We’ve got Stryder Liermann, Gavin Rider and Jack Woods who are probably our three senior starters,” Turpin said. “Then we’ve got other guys who are going to work their way into the starting lineup. I think pitching is looking pretty good.”

Throughout the season, the Badgers will face a Grangeville team that won 16 games last year and a Moscow squad that won 18.

Bonners Ferry also faces league opponent Timberlake in what could be the most important regular-season games. Last season, the Tigers finished 14-5 and ranked No. 46 in Idaho. This year, they opened 1-2.

The Badgers are scheduled for 18 games after four early contests were rained out.

Coach’s comments: “I’m excited that we’ve got 30 boys who have come out for our program,” Turpin said, including the JV program. “It’s a tremendous credit to our base, which starts with our little league programs and just the culture we have established over the years.”

On his goals for the season:

“Winning league, beating our archrival Timberlake and advancing to the state tournament is obviously our ultimate goal,” Turpin said. “It’s been four years.”

“I want these boys to walk away feeling like they left everything out there on the field,” Turpin said. “Whatever happens, happens. Baseball is a funny game. You can pitch a gem and lose 1-0 on an error. As long as we compete and play the game the right way, the wins and losses come as they come.”

On pitching depth:

“I’ve got about 12 to 13 guys who are available to pitch for me,” Turpin said. “We’re going to take a look at them and again put people in positions to be successful and see how we go.”

On the lineup:

“You really want to put people in good positions, put contact hitters in the right positions,” Turpin said. “It’s a work in progress up until the end of the year, but basically our top of the lineup is something I’m going to work with for the next couple weeks and see how that develops.”

Regarding camaraderie and team dynamics:

“There’s a great mix,” Turpin said. “I’ve got five seniors, I think we’ve got 10 freshmen who came out this year. We only lost two seniors from last year’s graduation, and we’ve got a really good sophomore base too, so we’ve got a good mix. The boys all get along with each other.”
