Last season: 11-12 (0-3 IML)

Players: Edna Abraham, fr.; Bentlee Anderson, 8th; Hailey Dickson, sr.; Hannah Frago, so.; Sadie Frederickson, sr.; Randi Hibbard, jr.; Kayden Jones, fr.; Alexys Madrid, so.; Rebekah McBride, jr.; Piper Mertzweiler, fr.; Gracie Munden, fr.; Ryelle Short, so.

Coaches: Tori Walker, head coach; Jessica Thompson, assistant coach.

Departures to graduation: Jaydin Falck, Alaina Schmier.

Outlook:

Bonners Ferry enters the season with a young roster, featuring only four juniors and seniors combined. As head coach Tori Walker said, “It’s going to be a big growing year.” That does not mean the Badgers cannot compete, however, after opening the season with two wins against Priest River.

The start of the season was disrupted by rain, with 10 games canceled and fewer early opportunities to prepare for league play against Timberlake.

With only 13 players on the roster and no junior varsity team, there is expected to be significant positional flexibility, with players prepared to fill multiple roles.

The Badgers face a difficult schedule, including two games against Potlatch, which went 19-1 last season and ranked No. 12 in Idaho. A late-season trip to Coeur d'Alene to face Lake City also presents a challenge after Lake City finished 16-9 and ranked No. 22 last season.

Timberlake finished 17-5 last year, including three wins over the Badgers. Bonners Ferry will look to reverse those results this spring.

Coach’s comments:

“We’ve come a long way in our couple short weeks of practice,” Walker said. “There’s still lots to go, but it’s early in the season, and games will be nice to help work out some of those kinks. We’re getting there.”

“I’m excited to see the growth throughout the year,” Walker said. “I hope everyone else comes out and supports them.”

On her goal for the team mentally:

“There are always errors,” Walker said. “There are always strikeouts. So for them to realize those things are OK, as long as they learn from it and become mentally stronger, that’s what’s going to make them a better player.”

On the team’s positional flexibility:

“You’ll play where your team needs you to play for each individual game,” Walker said. “That doesn’t mean for the season. That means each individual game. It might even be each individual inning.”

On her expectations for the team:

“I don’t care if we win or lose, as long as we learn something from that game,” Walker said. “Districts are the goal, and unfortunately we only have half a bid to state this year, so we do have to win that state play-in game.”

On pitching options:

“I have three pitchers who are very comfortable,” Walker said. “Then I’ve got a couple of freshmen who are interested.”

On team camaraderie:

“At the beginning of the season, I gave them each a piece of paper,” Walker said. “They each had to write a team rule they thought should be in place for the year and a team goal they had for the season. Out of 22 answers, 90% came back to wanting a better team bond.”

Her motto:

“If you don’t want to be better, then why are we here?” Walker said. “My goal is to make you better.”
